On the banks of Bog Brook in Stratford Hollow, New Hampshire, sits Library Hall. Built in 1884 as a two story building with the original purpose of operating a public library, the building housed the library on the lower level while a ballroom space with a stage and balcony on the top floor was often used by the community for various events. The building measured 65’ x 36’, and the first cost, with furnishings, was $2,000.
Since it’s opening in October of 1884, Library Hall has accommodated a library, general store with gas pumps, a post office, as well as a stove shop in recent years. The large upstairs “ballroom” held dances and plays, many that were performed by traveling troupes in the 1800s. Much later, the local youth held basketball games in the upper floor, as evidenced by the still remaining basketball hoop.
Library Hall has stood the test of time and many members of the community have passed through its doors and spaces, benefitting from the Hall’s offerings.
In 2016, after years of vacancy, renovations began with the start of clearing out years of nature’s overgrowth to reveal the real work ahead. The task of raising the building was next in order to secure a solid foundation with which to withstand occasional spring melts and any flooding from the brook.
Since 2016, the changes and updates have been many. A small private apartment is situated in the rear of the building on the lower level. In the front, currently included with the apartment, is a large room that has the potential of added commercial space if desired down the road.
The resurrection of Library Hall has been challenging, but the rewards in giving this fine building a deserved space in the Hollow has been realized.
